Working from home is most people’s idea of a dream come true. What people don’t realize, though is that working from home takes a certain amount of discipline. You need to learn how to manage your time when you work at home so that you can make the most of it. Luckily, there are loads of easy tech and lifestyle hacks that will help you along the way.
Make loads of lists
Nobody else is going to tell you what to do in your working day. That means that you need to take responsibility for your daily tasks. Make sure that you make loads of lists each day so that you can keep on top of your work. If you use a simple app, such as Evernote, you can sync your lists across all your devices. That means that it doesn’t matter which device you use; your notes will all be in the same place.
Keep a calendar on all devices
In the same way, you should make sure that you keep one calendar on all your devices.Having a synced calendar will change your working experience for the better. Google Calendar will work well if you want to create schedules, but there are many similar apps online if you want to take a look. You can schedule your time on your smartphone in the evening, and open your schedule on your MacBook in the morning.
Make sure your technology is fast
There is nothing more frustrating than having to stop working because your computer is slow. When you work at home, your income depends on how much work you do each day. That means that you need to make the most of your time. If your technology is slow, you are wasting time and wasting money. Loads of people ask me how to speed up my Mac. There is not just one answer. You can start by clearing out all the files on your hard drive. About every six months, go through your files and see what you can delete. Get rid of any old programs that you no longer need. In extreme circumstances, you can even reset your MacBook so that it is as good as new.
Keep your workspace clean and tidy
Where do you work in your home? You need an area to dedicate to work and work alone. That means that you need to choose a space where you feel comfortable to convert into your workspace. Make sure that you keep your workspace clean and tidy at all times. At least once a week, take ten minutes to clean up your desk and get rid of any paper you have lying around the area.
Schedule projects (and time yourself)
When you are working, you need to give yourself a time limit. If you don’t time yourself when you work on a certain project, nobody else will. Wasting an entire day on a project that won’t make you much cash, is a waste of your time. When you are creating a schedule, make sure you set a deadline for each task. That way, you can take control of your time.
Make sure you have a good sleeping pattern
One of the major obstacles people have when they work from home is maintaining a good sleeping pattern. If you work best at night, you might find that you stay up working until the early hours of the morning. That might be detrimental to your health. Day sleep is less-effective than night sleep. When you sleep during the day, you need around 1/3 more sleep to feel awake. That means that you are wasting your time. Instead, work to get a solid sleeping pattern. Work during the hours when your brain is most-active; that is between 8am and 6pm. Consider getting a light-based alarm clock for the winter so that you can wake up to a natural light simulation.
